PREHNITE ?   Pike Quarry, Hooksett, NH
2 mm string of milky rhombic crystals.
Species:           PREHNITE ?
Locality:          Pike Quarry, Hooksett, NH
Specimen Size: 2 mm string of milky rhombic crystals.
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer - 2014
Catalog No.: NC
Notes: First thought was that these were calcite, but gave NO fizz in muriatic acid. Given presence in basalt amygdule void, chabazite is good guess....but a Bob Wilken reminded me chabazite will slowly decompose to a gel in HCl. No decomposition was observed after several hours. The remaining prime candidate would seem to be prehnite.

TITANITE   Pike Quarry, Hooksett, NH
0.34 mm crystal

Species:           TITANITE
Locality:          Pike Quarry, Hooksett, NH
Specimen Size: ~ 0.45 mm crystal
Field Collected: Bob Wilken
Catalog No.: An Anna Wilken specimen. Bob WIlken photo
Notes: [bw] In the course of retaking the Pike Hooksett titanite photo I decided to do a comparison of how different the result can be depending on whether I put the specimen inside the ping pong ball or if I put the ping pong balls over the LED lights. You can see how the first way dulls luster and prevents light from penetrating the crystals. The second way you really see the crystals more like the eye sees them through the scope. But, often there is the tendency for the latter method to end up with flaring. It didn't in this case although the two little stripes on the end of the narrow crystal are quite bright. With masses of numerous reflective crystals, the ball over the specimen is the best way to go but at a sacrifice.

Unknown green-blue crust   Pike Quarry, Hooksett, NH
5.5 cm specimen
Species:           Unknown green-blue crust
Locality:          Pike Quarry, Hooksett, NH
Specimen Size: 5.5 cm specimen
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer - 2014
Catalog No.: NC
Notes: No fizz in muriatic (not a carbonate). Not soluable in acetone => not an organic paint. Not water soluable. Green-blue color and tests suggest a copper sulfate or a copper-zinc sulfate.

Unknown yellow ball   Pike Quarry, Hooksett, NH
0.3 mm UK yellow spherical masses, left
Species:           Unknown yellow ball
Locality:          Pike Quarry, Hooksett, NH
Specimen Size: 0.3 mm UK yellow spherical masses, left
Field Collected: Bob Wilken - 2014
Catalog No.: A Bob Wilken specimen
Notes: [bw] The nature of the two to the left is of foliated sheets. Could be mica? The ones to the right are vitreous and I catch a distinct triangular reflection at least in one place. Could be poorly formed ??? Odd that the same color spheres would be two different minerals so close together. The foliated group of two combined is 0.3 mm.
